Dear Mr T,

Thank you very much for your continuous interest in the Committee’s work and also in the coming outreach events from 19 to 21 July 2022. The latter are being organized in close collaboration with the Japanese authorities and the agenda is to be finalized this week.

For your information there will be scientific events scheduled two public events on public exposure and exposure from food after the accident in Iwaki on 22 July (morning). The aim of the meetings are two fold – to present the UNSCEAR report and also to obtain feedback from the Japanese governmental organizations, scientific community, students and the public.

The UNSCEAR is an open organization and you may notice more information being shared on the new website which includes a webpage on Fukushima (in Japanese). Most of the events will also be translated to Japanese for this purpose.

For you information, UNSCEAR has in place a very open and rigorous process of selection and work with suitable and well recognized experts, who sign a declaration of interest before they commence work. Its evaluations are independently reviewed before final review and adoption by the Committee and the UN General Assembly.

Regarding the questions and answers on UNSCEAR 2020/2021 Report, Annex B, I would like to clarify that the UNSCEAR secretariat (as per its current practice) will share on its website the most frequently asked questions and answers on its report this week (also in Japanese).

On your questions from last week please find below the answers:(太字がUNSCEARからの回答)

UNSCEAR translate the document into Japanese and make it open to the public within 2 weeks (before the outreach meeting is held) in order to make many Japanese citizens understand the contents of the document. I believe that this is the first step to start further scientific discussions.

【回答】 – if you refer to the UNSCEAR answer on the Kato paper, the responses of UNSCEAR are issued in English (as UN official language).

2.         The outreach meeting to be held in Japan from July 19th to 22nd should not be a one-sided explanation of the UNSCEAR2020/2021 report but should be rather a forum of discussion to clarify and discuss various issues with respect to UNSCEAR2020/2021 Report.  Therefore, the name of the meeting should be changed to the meeting for discussion. Would you please disclose the details of this discussion meeting as soon as possible?

【回答】– the agenda will is being finalised and disseminate in a week, with the support of MOFA. Please follow up our website.

3.         The 23 electric attachments should be translated into Japanese and published as soon as possible in order to make many Japanese understand and verify them.

【回答】– I understand the interest and value, and this could be done by the Japanese organizations, as this activity is not planned in the UNSCEAR project.

4.         This time UNSCEAR did not send the document to Kato and Yamada.  I request UNSCEAR that.

(1) In the same way, UNSCEAR send the document first to the authors of the  paper.

(2) The document and responses to it be uploaded on UNSCEAR’s website to make it open to the public

(3) UNSCEAR experts write a letter to the editor on the basis of the document and submit it to the journal that published Kato and Yamada paper.

【回答】The UNSCEAR secretariat in collaboration with the experts responded to your request, and it will reflect how to further disseminate clarifications on the report (in addition to the mission to Japan).

I hope that you find this information useful.

Best regards,

Borislava Batandjieva-Metcalf

 Secretary
